A Pennsylvania farmer went into the general store and was sold a thermometer, which he took home and hung on a bush. The next morning was the beginning of a cold snap that sent the mercury plunging. The first time he looked at the thermometer, the farmer counted ten frosty degrees above zero. The second morning the temperature had dipped to one above zero. The third morning there was a five-degree drop, and by the end of the week the thermometer recorded a frigid ten degrees below zero.

The following week the farmer went back to the store for supplies and the proprietor asked him hw the like the thermometer. "I had to smash the darn thing," was his reply.

"What on earth for?" asked the storekeeper.

"Well if I wouldn't have, we'd have all froze to death!"
